3 Psilocybin Microdosing Myths

It’s all the rage of those looking to cure their anxiety or boost their creativity: MICRODOSE!

Don’t forget to check out our NEW schedule here!

Maybe you don’t have the time to take a longer “trip” or retreat and microdosing psilocybin mushrooms may be another option. However-like with any hype that the internet gets ahold of-it can be a bit overblown. Below, we share our top 3 myths of the microdosing mania.

1. Microdosing will make me smarter. Due to lack of a large body of research, clients seem to think that microdosing is a “magic pill” that will make them smarter, more creative and possibly even a better human being.

Unfortunately there is no evidence to support that microdosing increases your level of intelligence. However, we do know that psilocybin can take non-communicating parts of the brain and reconnect them. Psilocybin also promotes neurogenesis which some experts believe leads to our perceived increase in creativity.

2. Microdosing will make my depression/anxiety go away. We all wish this were true! While some studies have shown that microdosing psilocybin can lead to an improved mood, more patience and a bit more calm in our everyday lives, there is nothing yet to show great reduction in depression or anxiety.

On the other hand, large doses or longer “trips” done in the correct set and setting can drastically improve both the symptoms of anxiety and depression. My suggestion is, if my clients are able, to take a longer retreat that is focused on using psilocybin in a holistic setting.

Take time away from your everyday life to “macrodose” with psilocybin. You’ll get the chance to learn not only from the medicine, but also the group, the leadership team and nature!  After that healing takes place, microdosing will have a much more powerful effect to sustain your lessons, creativity and overall health.

3. Microdosing will replace my other health/creative outlets. We all wish that microdosing would make it so our morning meditation practice would be rendered useless! We could simply take a tiny amount of mushrooms every 3 days and-voila!- no more yoga or mindfulness practice.

Sadly, this is not at all the case. Microdosing should be seen as a tool in your creative and health-focused tool belt. Meditation, mindfulness, reconnection with nature, compassion for yourself and others: these are all necessary to achieve the balance needed to lead a successful and healthy work life.

BOTTOM LINE: Microdosing is at an early age in regards to research on long-term effects. We’ve seen its anecdotal magic, but still need to stay grounded in our everyday health practices. To experience a longer-lasting and deeper creative boost and healing, its important to consider a longer retreat with higher doses before starting on a microdosing regimen.
